Great university climate: SRH Fernhochschule strengthens its commitment to climate protection

Die SRH Fernhochschule – The Mobile University kann sich nach ihrer aktuellen Erhebung der Treibhausgasbilanz erneut als klimaneutrale Institution bezeichnen. Doch das ist noch lange nicht genug.

Making the world a little better every day. SRH DLU achieves this not only with its educational products, which have already helped countless people to realize their dreams, but also with its sustainability strategy. Because the responsibility for climate protection is in all our hands.

Low emissions thanks to flexible working models

As a digital distance learning university with highly flexible study and working models, SRH Fernhochschule has particularly low emissions per employee compared to other universities. When the greenhouse gas balance was calculated according to the guidelines of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, an annual value of 1.46 tons per employee was calculated for the year 2022.

Paper, commuting and working from home

In total, this amounted to just under 246 tons of CO2 equivalents for that year. The main drivers here are commuting and the electricity and heat consumption of employees working from home, purchased hardware and the university's paper consumption. It should be emphasized here that the measures defined by the sustainability strategy from 2022 are already showing initial success in actively reducing the university's emissions. But of course, SRH Fernhochschule is not just sitting back.

Double compensation of CO2 through active measures at home and abroad

Despite all efforts, there are always emissions that unfortunately cannot be avoided. This is why SRH Fernhochschule goes beyond mere accounting and implements concrete measures to improve the climate. For example, we support a well-building project in Rwanda that addresses international and social goals. But we are also involved “right on our doorstep”. SRH Fernhochschule also supports a mountain forest project in Baden-Baden.

Christian Beditsch is the Sustainability Officer at SRH Fernhochschule. He explains the university’s approach to climate protection:

We operate in a climate-friendly way and produce very low greenhouse gas emissions compared to other providers in the higher education sector. Through our comprehensive sustainability strategy, we consistently and actively implement measures to reduce emissions in the university's operations. As part of offsetting our emissions, we support social and ecological projects at both international and national level. By actively reducing our greenhouse gas emissions and offsetting unavoidable emissions to the highest standards, we are fulfilling our responsibility to protect the climate.

We are continuing our commitment consistently this year and are trying to become a little better every day. As an education provider. And in climate protection.
